Reiki is an ancient healing technique that was rediscovered in Kyoto, Japan in 1922 by Mikao Usui (1865-1926) and was brought to the West in 1937 Chujiro Hayashi (1880-1940) and Hawayo Takata (1900-1980).
The popularity of Reiki has grown exponentially in the past few decades. A survey conducted in 2007 indicates that in the previous year, 1.2 million adults and 161,000 children in the U.S. received one or more Reiki sessions. And today there are millions of people around the world with Reiki in their hands.
Reiki is composed by the Rei and Ki syllables. At Mikao Usuis's time, Reiki was translated with soul energy or spiritual energy. Ki denotes the life force found in all living beings, universal life energy, whereas Rei denotes the universal, unlimited aspect of this energy. Like in techniques like Qi-gong, Tai-chi, acupuncture or martial arts, Reki has many meanings: Spiritual, Divine, Spiritual.
You can also say that Reiki is intelligent universal life energy and it goes where it is needed.
Mikao Ususi said that the more people who get Reiki in their hands, the more peaceful the world becomes.
"In times such as these, happiness is based upon
cooperation of humankind, and the longing for
the progress of society."
